Description
The National Security Sector at Leidos is seeking a motivated and talented Data Science Intern to join our team on-site at Eglin AFB, FL, in support of the Joint Staff J6 Joint Assessment Division (JAD) starting in Summer 2026. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to system-of-systems interoperability assessments and advance Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) data-centricity initiatives. As an intern, you will work alongside experienced data scientists, engineers, and analysts, applying your skills to solve real-world challenges and gain valuable hands-on experience in a dynamic and impactful environment. You will contribute to delivering actionable insights to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, directly enhancing Joint Force capabilities.Primary Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and implementing data processing pipelines to ingest, clean, and transform data from diverse sources, including sensors, Command and Control (C2) systems, weapon systems, GPS trackers, and observer logs.
- Support the extraction of key events and parameters from raw data to reconstruct operational sequences describing system performance during critical scenarios (e.g., threat detection, engagement, and mitigation).
- Contribute to the development and implementation of algorithms for event recognition, anomaly detection, and data correction.
- Assist in creating methods for correlating information across disparate systems with different data representations.
- Support data quality and governance processes to ensure data integrity and reliability.
- Collaborate with data engineers to learn about building scalable and robust data infrastructures on cloud platforms.
- Work closely with subject matter experts to understand mission requirements and translate them into data-driven solutions.
- Participate in code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Contribute to research and development efforts to explore new data science techniques and technologies relevant to CJADC2.
- Complete assigned tasks and projects under the guidance of senior team members.
Example Project Areas
- Threat Engagement Analysis: Assist in the analysis of data from radar systems, weapon systems, and C2 systems to reconstruct threat engagement sequences, identify performance bottlenecks, and assess the effectiveness of mitigation strategies.
- System Interoperability Assessment: Assist in the analysis of communication logs and data exchanges between different military systems to identify interoperability issues, communication delays, and data translation errors.
- Data Quality Improvement: Assist in identifying and resolving data quality issues across various data sources.
Basic Qualifications
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Familiarity with at least one data scripting language (Python or R).
- Basic understanding of data science libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, matplotlib).
- Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
- Professional writing and oral presentation skills, MS Office proficiency.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, matplotlib).
- Coursework or projects involving machine learning, statistical modeling, or data mining.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Passion for learning and contributing to innovative solutions.
- Familiarity with virtual computing environments (Azure preferred) and modern tech stacks.
At Leidos, we don’t want someone who "fits the mold"-we want someone who melts it down and builds something better. This is a role for the restless, the over-caffeinated, the ones who ask, “what’s next?” before the dust settles on “what’s now.”
If you’re already scheming step 20 while everyone else is still debating step 2... good. You’ll fit right in.
