Description
We are seeking a Data Science Intern to join our Life Sciences Data Science team. This internship is focused on extracting and leveraging insights from unstructured and semi-structured clinical data using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML). The intern will support projects that transform raw clinical text into NLP-enriched data to power Real World Evidence (RWE) studies and the Veradigm Network EHR (VNEHR) dataset.
This role is ideal for a student currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science or a related field who has completed academic or personal projects involving NLP. You will gain hands-on experience working with real healthcare data, modern ML tools, and cross-functional teams including clinicians, product managers, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
NLP & Machine Learning Development
Assist in designing, developing, and evaluating NLP and ML models in Python to extract information from unstructured and semi-structured clinical text.
Apply modern NLP techniques and libraries (e.g., spaCy, scikit-learn, transformers) in project-based work.
Support experimentation with large language models (LLMs) and related frameworks under guidance from senior data scientists.
Clinical Collaboration & Validation
Work with clinical subject matter experts to help validate model outputs and improve accuracy in clinical contexts.
Incorporate feedback from clinicians and stakeholders to refine models and data extraction approaches.
Data Pipelines & Analytics
Contribute to building and testing data processing pipelines used in research and early-stage production.
Perform exploratory data analysis on clinical text and structured datasets to identify patterns, features, and data quality issues.
Communication & Documentation
Document methodologies, experiments, and results clearly.
Present findings and project updates to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Qualifications
Required:
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Data Science, Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field.
Coursework or project experience in NLP (e.g., class projects, research, internships, or personal projects).
Proficiency in Python and basic working knowledge of SQL.
Familiarity with common ML/NLP libraries (e.g., spaCy, scikit-learn, NLTK, PyTorch, TensorFlow).
Preferred:
Experience from academic projects using LLMs or transformer-based models.
Exposure to healthcare, biomedical, or clinical text data (e.g., EMRs, research abstracts).
Basic familiarity with cloud or data platforms (e.g., Azure, Snowflake, Spark) through coursework or projects.
Interest in applied data science within healthcare and life sciences.
Key Skills and Competencies
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Ability to learn quickly and apply new techniques in a project environment.
Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
Awareness of data privacy, ethics, and responsible use of health data (HIPAA concepts a plus).
Intern program begins May 18th and ends August 7th.
