Senior Staff Architect - Data Platform
Office - San Diego, CA
Full time
R-4017
As a Senior Staff Architect, you'll work with an industry-leading Video Telematics system, which manages massive amounts of video and data collected from over 600,000 vehicles worldwide.
You will architect end-to-end data platform systems spanning streaming ingestion, storage, processing, and analytics—establishing the technical standards, patterns, and architecture decisions that guide the organization. Your mission is to drive strategic technical initiatives, resolve complex cross-domain challenges, mentor senior engineers, and ensure the platform scales to meet business growth while maintaining operational excellence. You balance deep technical expertise with business impact, translating executive priorities into actionable architecture roadmaps.
You'll Get To
- Define and drive the evolution of the technical blueprint and deployment views for data platform infrastructure (streaming, batch, lakehouse, warehouse, orchestration, services).
- Architect AWS-native solutions leveraging MSK, Kinesis, EMR, S3, Redshift, Athena, EKS, and related services; optimize for performance, cost, and reliability.
- Establish and enforce architectural standards, patterns, and principles; author foundational ADRs that shape platform direction.
- Design network topologies for secure data movement: VPC design, PrivateLink, security groups, and multi-account patterns.
- Establish data modeling standards for analytical and streaming workloads; design dimensional models, event schemas, and partitioning strategies.
- Conduct architecture reviews for platform and domain team projects; provide technical guidance and feedback.
- Mentor Engineers on architecture, AWS best practices, and data modeling.
- Evaluate new technologies through POCs; provide build vs. buy recommendations with clear technical rationale.
- Partner with engineering leadership on technical roadmap planning and cross-team coordination.
- Champion data quality, observability, and governance practices in platform design.
What You'll Need:
- 12+ years in software/data engineering with 4+ years in architect or principal-level roles designing large-scale data platforms.
- Expert-level AWS proficiency: deep hands-on experience architecting production data platforms using MSK/Kafka, S3, Redshift, Athena, Glue, EMR, EKS, Lambda, Step Functions, and CloudWatch. Must demonstrate mastery of AWS service integration patterns and best practices.
- Advanced networking expertise: proven ability to design secure, scalable AWS network architectures including VPC design, subnetting, routing, PrivateLink, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, security groups, NACLs, and multi-account networking strategies. Experience with data egress optimization and cross-region architectures.
- Data modeling in depth: extensive experience designing data models for diverse workloads (OLTP, OLAP, streaming, lakehouse). Deep knowledge of dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, slowly changing dimensions, event schema design, and normalization/denormalization trade-offs. Expertise in schema evolution, partitioning strategies, and indexing for query optimization.
- Proven track record architecting and delivering complex distributed systems serving thousands of users or processing petabyte-scale data.
- Deep expertise across the modern data stack: streaming (Kafka, Flink, Kinesis), lakehouse (Iceberg, Delta, Hudi), warehousing (Redshift, Snowflake), orchestration (Airflow, Dagster), and cloud infrastructure patterns.
- Coding ability in typed backend languages (Java/Scala/C#) and Python; able to review code, prototype solutions, and guide implementation.
- Experience leading technical strategy for multi-team initiatives; translating business goals into architecture roadmaps with clear milestones.
- Exceptional communication skills: able to present technical proposals to executives, write compelling ADRs, and influence without authority.
- Track record mentoring senior engineers and elevating team capabilities through architecture reviews, pairing, and design feedback.
