Essential duties and Responsibilities

  • Interviews, hires and orients partners to maintain appropriate staffing levels and accomplish department goals.  Conducts performance appraisals.  Trains and develops partners to ensure retention of most qualified, productive and motivated staff.  Assess needs and address performance issues through means of coaching, feedback, performance appraisals and corrective action. Write and maintain updated job descriptions.  Coordinates student internships.  Oversee Kronos timekeeping.
  • Develops and implements departmental policies/guidelines to ensure that coding/abstracting functions are completed accurately and efficiently with regards to compliance and reimbursement. Prepares and adheres to the operating/salary expense budget
  • Manages several million dollars in accounts receivable held for coding. Maintains discharged not final billed (DNFB) over 7 days from discharge at an agreed upon level. Proactively works directly with medical staff to complete coding queries/documentation needed for coding and with IS to troubleshoot and resolve any system related issues.
  • Performs ongoing monitoring and communication of quality and productivity for each individual and the team as a whole, ensuring compliance with all government and other regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates review and appeal process for potential DRG changes, inpatient and outpatient denials and claim edits.  Works closely with CDI Specialists, RAC Coordinator, insurance/charge auditors, PFS and ancillary departments to address any DRG, documentation or coding/abstracting related issues.
  • Responsible for maintaining workflows, monitoring coding activities and conducting data analysis related to publicly reported data, pay for performance, patient safety indicators, hospital acquired conditions, severity of illness, risk of mortality and mortality reviews.
  • Works in collaboration with the CDI Supervisor and Specialists to facilitate open communication with the coding staff, provide training for coders, CDI Specialists and providers and address coding/documentation issues.  In conjunction with the CDI Supervisor, responsible for resolving 2nd level DRG validations. 
  • Maintains current knowledge of the statutes, regulations and accreditation standards pertaining to HIM coding practices.  Maintains CEU’s required for HIM and coding certifications.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required.  Health Information Management or Associate's degree in Health Information Technology preferred.
  • Five years’ experience in a health information department, including two years at the supervisory level. Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

Certifications/Licensure

  • Current registration with AHIMA; RHIA/RHIT/CCS preferred.
