The Center for Library Exploration and Research (CLEAR) and the Spatial Structures in the Social Sciences (S4) at Brown University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Quantitative Data Analytics. The initial appointment, beginning February 1, 2027, would be for a 2-year period, renewable with potential for longer-term appointments based on performance and need. This onsite position includes teaching in Brown’s in-person Master’s in Social Data Analytics (MSDA) program, and working in CLEAR Data Services geospatial data center to provide student and faculty data research consultations, and contribute to ongoing local and national data and Geospatial research projects.
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be affiliated with CLEAR Data Services and S4 and will have access to considerable S4 research infrastructure.
The Postdoctoral Research Associate should have strong interdisciplinary and academic experience in quantitative data analysis. The incumbent will teach one MSDA course per year (flexible level and topic) and in the bi-annual GIS Institute administered by S4.
The area of scholarship and substantive expertise is open, with a preference for candidates who have demonstrated knowledge of GIS and spatial analysis. We seek candidates who will contribute to our overall intellectual culture and can participate in research.
Postdoctoral Research Associates receive standard benefits and an allocation for travel and research expenses. Additionally, successful candidates will receive a $3,000 salary supplement during their first year to offset relocation expenses. For this position, Brown offers only the J-1 visa classification to scholars who need immigration sponsorship in order to enter the U.S. and commence lawful employment under the terms of their appointment.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Geography, Sociology, Information Science, Data Science or a related data-intensive field awarded on or after February 1, 2024. ABD candidates are welcome to apply if they will have completed all degree requirements by the position start date, February 1, 2027.
- Demonstrated expertise in quantitative research methods and statistical software.
- A strong conceptual understanding of the data research lifecycle and the role of GIS in modern scholarship.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the CLEAR Data Services team and S4 community.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach one course per year (flexible level and topic) in the Master’s in Social Data Analytics (MSDA) program
- Teach, consult, and participate in the bi-annual S4 GIS Institute, an inter-departmental two-week workshop program for the Brown University community
- Create on-line tutorials and develop and teach GIS and data-related workshops
- Hold regular office hours to support geospatial and data-intensive research on campus, directly supporting the research and coursework of students and faculty
- Participate in and on-going and adhoc GIS and data projects managed by the library and S4
- Please note that a selected candidate who has not completed all requirements for their doctoral degree by the position start date will be appointed as a Research Associate at a reduced salary until all degree requirements are completed.
